C of E Primary School

Autumn Term Curriculum 2020

Autumn Term Curriculum

Literacy: We will be reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S Lewis before writing new versions which will include our own mythical creatures.

The main focus of this term will be on Place Value to ensure that the children have a secure understanding of numbers to at least 1,000,000 and of numbers with up to 3 decimal places. We will also be working on a number of mental/arithmetic strategies at the start of lessons and we will continue to practice our recall of multiplication tables.

Material Properties: The children will learn vocabulary specific to the properties of different materials and apply these when grouping and classifying different materials and assessing their effectiveness. They will also plan and carry out a range of investigations into thermal conductivity.

The children will be studying the Bible and its origins, distribution and usage around the world, looking at how Christians view and use the Bible in everyday life. They will also cover a unit looking at the Sacred Texts from a different faith.

Design and Technology:

Our unit will be mechanical systems: Cams. The children will design, make and evaluate a moving toy for a younger child to play with. We will use photographs and videos to investigate and evaluate existing products and understand the different types of movement that can be made by cam mechanisms. The children will practice making their own cam mechanisms and a range of other skills such as using hand drills to make an off-centre cam and measuring skills in order for the cam to work smoothly. After making the products, the children will evaluate it by comparing it to the original design specification.

The children will study the different biomes around the world and we will carry out field work to find out more about woodlands.

This unit will focus on coding through Purple Mash. The children will create their own programs using a character, a car and an animal. They will review terminology such as: Object, Action, Control and Event.

Mrs Simms will take Blue Class for French on Tuesday afternoons.

This will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with Mr Carr. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school at all times.
