Burnley St Peter's

C of E Primary School

Autumn 1

What ideas does your class have to improve our school yard?

Our school has decided to start by improving the slope in our school yard.

Your idea was to improve the slope by adding climbing ladders.

The trim trail will be extended to run all the way to the edge of the yard. We will move the train, add more 'mulch' on the floor and the add a climbing wall. This will also stop that area getting all muddy and messy.

You also wanted to make the slope more exciting (tree swings etc, slide, ladder etc) and add artificial grass on the slope.

When the team came to look at the slope, they said they cannot use artificial grass due to technical challenges, but they can add more 'mulch'. This would mean the slope would be a surface like under the trim trail. We could use the area all year round and it would stop the dirt and mud running down onto the yard. In time we can have further climbing ladders adding.

Autumn 1 School Council findings

This half term our question is: What ideas does your class have to improve our school yard?

This half term the elected school councilors have been busy discussing the question above and sent their findings to me. I have collated these into one document as some ideas had been repeated.

Ø Make the yard look more inviting by adding more plants and flowers.

Ø Have a shed full of outdoor equipment which is opened at lunch and playtimes for us to choose what we would like to play with.

Ø Have a tree house on the slope or wooden shed.

Ø Wooden tepee

Ø Tree swings

Ø Soft artificial grass or a soft area on the football pitch.

Ø Improve the wildlife garden with a summer house, benches, lots of pots with plants (think Coronation Street).

Ø Improve the slope by adding climbing ladders.

Ø Giant chess set.

Ø Plant fruit trees.

Ø Make the slope more exciting (tree swings etc, slide, ladder etc).

Ø Have a school green house where each class takes it in turns to look after the plants and plant new things.

Ø Water fountains.

Ø Outdoor trampolines.

Ø Story telling area (big special chair and small toad stools around).

Ø More wooden benches.

Ø Artificial grass on the slope.

Ø An outdoor classroom.
