SMJ Falconry Visit 04.10.22

On Tuesday 4th October 2022 Katie from SMJ Falconry came to visit us. She bought some very special guests with her:

  • Titon - American Kestrel
  • Molly - Tawny Owl
  • Bugs - Long Eared Owl
  • Tyke - Burrowing Owl
  • Bobby - Tropical Screech Owl

We learnt some key facts about owls:

  • An owls eye colour tells you when it comes out. Dark eyed owls come out at night, orange eyed owls come out at dusk, light eyed owls come out during the day.
  • An owl reaches full adult size at just 8 weeks old.
  • Most owls feathers are designed for camouflage.
  • Owls swallow their food whole and then sick it up in something called a Pellet. A pellet contains the bones and fur and bits the owl can't digest.
  • Owls fly silently.
  • Owls can turn their heads most of the way round.

Take a look at the pictures below from our exciting afternoon!
