Curriculum Overview Summer 1

Literacy

Once we have finished our non-fiction information leaflets about The Romans, we will start our narrative unit based around Boudicca. The children will explore research and explore the character of Boudicca as well as other characters from historical narratives. Grammar skills will include revisiting adverbs leading to the use of fronted adverbials; prepositions and complex sentences using the conjunction since. Short writing opportunities will include: writing character descriptions, Top Trumps cards and writing a speech for the main character. The final outcome will be a historical narrative story set in the Iron Age.

 

Maths

In maths this half term we will be looking at 2D shape, focusing on angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, sorting and drawing 2D shapes. We will revisit formal written methods for addition and subtraction using a columnar method and link this to solving problems from bar graphs. Next the children will study equivalent fractions and how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. Then we will study position and direction, describing positions, turns and movement on a grid. Finally, we will study time, revisiting o’ clock, half past, quarter to and past moving onto telling the time to 5 minute intervals.

 

Science

We will complete our learning on Magnets and Forces then our next Science topic this half term is Rocks. We will be comparing and grouping together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties, describing in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock and recognizing that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

 

Art & Design

This half term the children will study jewellery making. First they will investigate jewellery from periods of history that they have studied, for example Stone Age to Iron Age and the Roman period. The children will also learn about different jewellery designers. Taking inspiration from their research, they will design their own pieces of jewellery and explore different jewellery making techniques and materials. Finally they will create their final piece of jewellery.

 

Computing

We will complete our unit on Presenting using Powerpoint. The children will learn how to add, text, media and animation to slides within Powerpoint.

 

Geography

This half term the children will investigate earthquakes and volcanoes: what they are; why they happen; and how they affect the landscape and human activity.

 

RE

Our RE unit this half term in ‘What do Christians learn from the creation story?’ We will be placing the concepts of God and Creation on a timeline of the Bible’s ‘Big Story’, making clear links between Genesis 1 and what Christians believe about God and Creation, describing what Christians do because they believe God is Creator and asking questions and suggesting answers about what might be important in the creation story for Christians living today including for people who are not Christian.

 

French

This half term, our French learning will be all about fruits and vegetables. We will explore the story of the Hungry Giant in French, counting fruits and vegetables and remembering fruit and vegetable noun to write a sentence using a model.

 

PSHE

Firstly, we will be finishing off our spring term unit on relationships looking at respectful behaviours and self-respect. Then we will move onto our Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing unit. We will discuss choices that people make in daily life that could affect health, identifying healthy and unhealthy choices and habits that can be maintained, changed and stopped. We will recap on a healthy, balanced diet from Science, the impact of exercise and we will also think about feelings and how we can identify and talk about them.

 

PE

In PE this half term we will be covering a striking and fielding unit through rounders and also athletic activities.

 

Dance

Helen will continue to teach our dance lessons on Thursday mornings.

 

Music

Our music lessons will continue to be taught by Mrs Spall on Monday mornings.
