Green Class – Spring 1 Curriculum Overview

Literacy

Our unit this half term will be based around the novel, The Iron Man. Our grammar focus will be on adverbs, verbs and complex sentences using the conjunctions, since and until. Throughout the unit, we will focus on writing in role as different main characters. We will also explore how the author develops character and setting in the opening paragraphs of each chapter before writing our version of a section of the story. We will also explore the features of instruction texts within this unit.

Maths

We will start this half term with division, focusing on sharing and grouping then moving onto division using repeated subtraction on a number line. We will then move onto place value, addition and subtraction. We will round numbers to the nearest 100 and add and subtract in tens and ones crossing boundaries. Later in the half term we will also revisit multiplication, focusing on the 8 times table, multiplying by 10 and using the grid method to multiply multiples of 10 by a single digit e.g. 36 x 3.

Science

We will start by finishing our Science unit on the Skeleton. Following this, our new Science topic this half term is Light.  We will identify different light sources as we recognize that we need light to see things. We will be exploring how light reflects from surfaces and how light from the sun can be dangerous. We will also explore how shadows are formed and look for patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.

DT

Our DT unit is a food technology unit. We will be looking at creating a heartwarming and healthy soup. We will start by exploring different existing soup products and linking back to our previous History unit about the Stone Age to Iron Age. The children will be encouraged to think about what sorts of foods would have been available during this time and how this simple food has been adapted by herbs, spices and other ingredients from other parts of the world. We will explore seasonality of ingredients from which the children will plan and make their own soup. Within this, we will recap on the Eatwell plate and Healthy Eating unit from Science.

Computing

Our Purple Mash computing unit this half term is Spreadsheets. In this unit the children will learn that by entering data into a table, the information can automatically be created into a chart. They will learn about cell addresses and use tools to help them with calculations.

History

This half term, the children will do a local history study of Burnley as a mill town. The key question will be: Why has the landscape of Burnley changed since the 1800s? The children will look at the impact and development of the mills on our landscape and how the old mills are being used now. This study will include a trip to the local weaving mill, Queen Street Mill.
